ASTM B912-26 Published: Key Considerations for Stainless Steel Electropolishing and Passivation Verification
ASTM International has published ASTM B912-26, Standard Specification for Passivation of Stainless Steels Using Electropolishing, superseding ASTM B912-02(2018).
The standard addresses the passivation of stainless steel through electropolishing. Its publication provides an opportunity for precision component manufacturers, engineers and quality teams to review drawing specifications, surface treatment requirements and acceptance criteria.
01 | Scope of ASTM B912-26
According to ASTM’s publicly available information, B912-26 covers stainless steel alloys in the 200, 300 and 400 series, together with precipitation-hardened alloys.
Under appropriate operating conditions, electropolishing and surface passivation can occur simultaneously. The resulting surface characteristics depend on the material, initial surface condition and processing conditions.
Engineers should therefore consider both the required surface characteristics and the relevant acceptance requirements when specifying electropolishing.
02 | Electropolishing Goes Beyond Surface Brightness
Electropolishing is an electrochemical surface treatment that can improve surface smoothness, help remove surface free iron and contribute to corrosion resistance.
However, a bright appearance alone does not demonstrate successful passivation verification.
For precision components, material compatibility, surface condition and verification requirements remain essential considerations.
03 | How Does ASTM B912 Differ from ASTM A967?
ASTM B912 specifically addresses stainless steel passivation using electropolishing.
ASTM A967/A967M covers several passivation treatment methods and associated verification procedures.
Although both standards concern passivation, their treatment requirements should not automatically be regarded as interchangeable.
Engineering drawings should clearly identify the applicable standard, edition, treatment and acceptance requirements.
04 | Quality Verification Beyond Visual Appearance
The publicly available ASTM B912 abstract identifies several evaluation methods, including water immersion, humidity, salt spray, copper sulphate and modified ferroxyl testing.
Each method has its own applicability. This does not mean that every component must undergo every listed test.
The appropriate verification arrangements should be established according to the applicable standard, product requirements and purchasing documentation.
05 | Do Engineering Drawings Need Updating?
ASTM B912-26 is the current edition, but its publication does not automatically require every existing product or drawing referencing an earlier edition to adopt it.
Engineering and quality teams should review:
- Whether a specific edition is identified.
- Whether electropolishing and passivation requirements are clearly defined.
- Whether test methods, acceptance criteria and quality documentation are consistent.
The publicly available information does not establish every clause-by-clause change from the previous edition. Specific changes to acceptance limits should therefore not be assumed.
06 | KUN-QI’s Focus on Precision Surface Treatment
Electropolishing and stainless steel passivation are important surface treatment services provided by KUN-QI.
For precision stainless steel components, KUN-QI places emphasis on material characteristics, surface quality and customer-specified technical requirements while following developments in international standards.
The publication of ASTM B912-26 highlights the importance of aligning engineering drawings, applicable editions and quality verification requirements before surface treatment begins.
